Favourite Albums of 2007!

1. Super Taranta! - Gogol Bordello

And aside from Underdog World Strike, quite possibly the best album in the world. I can't even list my favorite songs off the album because the entire album is beyond God. But I will say, 'Wonderlust King' is my anthem. 'Ultimate' is the ultimate show opener. 'Harem is Tuscany' is about my childhood.

2. Hvarf/Heim - Sigur Ros

Incredible. It's a little more aggressive than their other albums, which I love. Also, you absolutely MUST see their film, Heima. Even if you don't like Sigur Ros, you have to see this film. It is a flawless film and I was lucky enough to watch it in a theatre by myself, and the entire time I had chills all over my body. 'Salka' and 'I Gaer' are my favorites so far, along with a new version of 'Heysatan'.

3. La Radiolina - Manu Chao

It's pretty hard not to fall in love with Manu Chao from the second you hear him. 'Me Llama Calle' is one of the best songs I've ever heard live.

4. 23 - Blonde Redhead

This album is so fucking eerie and beautiful. '23' is such a wild and different song from what they usually do. I highly advise you get this.

5. Nu Med - Balkan Beat Box

National Geographic dubbed them the dance party of the future. Tomer and Ori and Tamir are incredible musicians and each one of the albums gets better and better. Although, their records will NEVER do them justice. See them live, even if you don't like them much. Your brain will be exploded. 'Gypsy Queens', 'Shushan' and 'Pachima' are the best.

6. Back to Black - Amy Winehouse

O, Amy Amy Amy. Please don't kill yourself. You're a Goddess. This is a masterpiece. No artists will make an album this good that became so successful in under a year anytime soon. She's a genius and I have a huge girl crush on her, even if she's a meth head and missing a few teeth. 'Rehab', 'Me and Mr. Jones (Fuckery), 'My Tears Dry On Their Own', and 'You Know I'm No Good'. Essentially, this is the ultimate breakup/heartbreak album.

7. Hemvagen EP - Detektivbyran

I'm very proud to have found this little diamond of a band exactly 11 months ago and spread it like a plague. 'E18' and 'Danbanan' are magical. Imagine Sigur Ros meets Caribou. I'm not sure you can actually buy their album here but ordering offline works too.

8. On Time Travel and Romance - Agent Ribbons

This was pure fate. Earlier this year while seeing an old friend's band play, I had the pleasure of seeing one of my new favorite bands live before ever hearing an album. I met Natalie afterwards and she is now one of my favorite people in the world. They just played on stage with Cake, too! Among the mass clusters of stupid girl bands, Agent Ribbons is a beautiful needle in the haystack. 'Chelsea, Let's Go Join The Circus', 'Birds and Bees', 'Boy With the Wooden Lips', 'Strangers', and 'Obituary' are my favorites. If you order an album straight from them via MySpace, they hand make the album cover for you! Very cute! They recently played on NPR. They are going to explode over the next year or so.

9. Kala - M.I.A.

Yeah, Paper Planes. That's what's up. I also want to point out all the stupid yuppies out there who refer to her as 'world music'. Is that because her parents are from Sri Lanka?

10. Disko Partizani - Shantel

Originally the work of my friend DJ Tagada. Aside from Timo Maas and Girl Talk, Shantel is the only guy who can pull off anything he remixes. In most cases, it's better than the original. Disko Partizani is one of my favorite songs ever. I saw Shantel and Typsy Gypsy in Barcelona and it was one of the best nights of my life. This album is up on iTunes now, so go get it. He also looks exactly like Lily's dad, I'm so serious.

11. Friend Opportunity - Deerhoof

DDddeeeeerrrrhhhooooooooffff. Like Blonde Redhead, I guess trios with short Asian girl lead singers and two tall guys work incredibly well. This album also has some of the best production I've heard in a long time. The entire album is fantastic.

12. Kings and Queens - Fanfare Ciorcarlia

Dzamo dzamo, banda tzovolo nitzani. Gambutshuo zkalo Roma.. Hoptza! Another reason I hate America is they won't allow amazing musicians like this to come here and perform but they allow Britney Spears to hit people with her car and snort lines off her baby's chest.

13. Maahan - Alamaailman Vasarat

Pump organs and accordions! Hip hop, dub, and punk! This entire album is so good. Put it on repeat.

14. The Reminder - Feist

I like her more and more each time I hear her. '1234' is such a sweet song, and she's such a different and likeable approach to music. Throwing confetti in the air during her shows is a lot of fun, too. It's an old song/video, but whenever I'm sad I watch her video for Mushaboom and feel better. It makes me miss Prague and wish I could fly.

15. Volta - Bjork

The Ice Queen is better than you. It's not her best work, but still a very good album. 'Earth Intruders' is a really good thing.

I have so many albums I didn't mention but 2007 was a really good year for music. Ciao!

You've no idea how emotionally straining this was.

I know. I've tried before, with books too: it's just not worth the pain for me.

A pain like hunger or deprevation.

Technically, M.I.A is from London, as that's where she was born ;)

I can never make a top 10 favorite albums of the year list because I'm a rollercoaster when it comes to enjoying and discovering music from the past and present...and it gets a lot more complex than that.

Same here. The only one I'm certain for it's place is #1, of course.
